Ruttl alternatives

By LayerdockUpdated

How this list was made

Every price below was read off that vendor’s own pricing page on — not from a directory or another roundup, which are routinely months stale. Where a vendor publishes no price, the entry says so rather than guessing.

Layerdock makes one of the tools on this list. It is placed in verified entry-price order like everything else, not at the top, and the section on where Ruttl is still the better buy is real rather than a softened weakness.

Ruttl alternatives worth considering, ordered by verified entry price rather than by preference.

Why teams look for a Ruttl alternative

Ruttl is a design-review tool first. Its edit mode lets a reviewer change text, images, colour or spacing on the live page and export the change as CSS, which nothing else in this category does. Teams who look elsewhere are rarely arguing with that feature.

The common reason is the pricing model. Pro is $18 per user per month, so cost follows your headcount rather than your client list. With five people that is $90 a month, and it grows with every designer or contractor you add.

The other is what a pin carries. Ruttl does not capture console or network data, so a developer picking up a ticket still has to reproduce the problem from a description. A smaller point from reviewers: cancelling is reported to need a call to support rather than being self-service, and some of Ruttl’s AI features were labelled coming soon on its site when we last looked.

Where Ruttl is still the better choice

  • Edit mode is a genuine differentiator. Showing the change on the page instead of writing a paragraph about it removes a round of ambiguity, and none of the tools below replicate it.
  • Unlimited projects and guests on Pro, 15 device sizes, mobile-app review, video comments and a free plan (5 users, 1 project, 5 pages). That is a lot of breadth for the price.
  • It loads the client site through a proxy, so like the tools below that need no install it works without deploy access.

7 alternatives to Ruttl

Layerdock$19/moHosted link, live site
Pastel$35/moHosted review of a URL
Userback$39/moWidget + browser extension

1. Ybug

€13/mo — 3 members, 3 projects

The cheapest route in the live-site group to full console and network logs, with a widget and a browser extension. The step down for a team that needs bug context more than design edits.

Where it is worse: Priced in euros, with 3 members and 3 projects at entry where Ruttl Pro has unlimited projects. No CSS editing.

2. Layerdock

Layerdock is our product. It sits here on verified entry price, like every other tool on this page.

$19/mo — Per workspace, unlimited reviewers

Priced per workspace, so adding people does not move the bill, and client reviewers are unlimited and free on every tier. Console errors and failed network requests are recorded on every pin, and pins stay anchored through a redeploy.

Where it is worse: We make this one. Reviewers can pin and describe but cannot change the page, so if proposing a visual change is the point, stay on Ruttl. The console and network read is on the Agency plan at $69/mo ($59/mo billed yearly), and the $19 Pro plan caps you at 5 docks against Ruttl’s unlimited projects.

3. Pastel

$35/mo — 2 users, 3 canvases

The simplest hosted review of a URL: paste it, share a link, and reviewers comment without an account. Reviewers are unlimited on every tier.

Where it is worse: Pro is $35/mo for 2 users and 3 canvases, and Team is per-user again. No CSS editing and no console or network capture.

4. Userback

$39/mo — 5 seats, 5 projects ($29 annually)

Visual feedback plus session replay, surveys and feature voting, for a team that wants to hear from end users as well as reviewers. Widget and extension.

Where it is worse: Seat-priced at 5 seats on the $39/mo plan, with unlimited seats only from $99/mo. Built around product teams rather than design review.

5. Feedbucket

$49/mo — 2 members, unlimited projects ($39 annually)

A focused agency review tool with nothing bolted on. Client reporters and projects are unlimited on every plan.

Where it is worse: The entry plan is 2 members at $49/mo ($39 billed annually), and it is a script-tag widget that needs deploy access.

6. BugHerd

$50/mo — 5 members, unlimited projects

A built-in kanban board and unlimited projects from the entry tier, so feedback becomes a tracked task without leaving the tool.

Where it is worse: $50/mo for 5 members with extra members at $8/mo each, so the per-seat pressure is still there. No design editing.

7. MarkUp.io

$79/mo — Unlimited users, 1 workspace, 50 MarkUps/mo

The closest match if the PDF and image review is what you use Ruttl for: it annotates over 30 file types with unlimited users.

Where it is worse: A hosted markup of a URL rather than the live page, with no console or network capture, and 50 MarkUps a month on one workspace at $79/mo.

Common questions

What is the cheapest Ruttl alternative?

Ybug at €13/mo for 3 members and 3 projects, and Layerdock at $19/mo per workspace, are the two close to Ruttl’s $18/user/mo entry price. For one or two users Ruttl is cheaper or about even. Because it is per user, a five-person team is $90 a month on Ruttl, where Layerdock stays at $19 for the workspace.

Which Ruttl alternative does not charge per user?

Layerdock is priced per workspace ($19/mo Pro with 7 team members, $69/mo Agency or $59/mo billed yearly with 20), and reviewers are unlimited on every tier. Ybug includes a fixed number of members per plan. Userback and BugHerd both charge per seat or member.

Can any alternative edit the page like Ruttl?

Not among the tools on this page. Layerdock, BugHerd, Pastel and the others let reviewers pin and describe, not change the page. If proposing a visual change on the live page is the point, Ruttl is the better fit and we would not argue otherwise.

Which alternatives capture console errors?

Ruttl does not. Ybug records a limited console log on its €13 plan and full console and network logs from €29. Layerdock records the console and network bundle on every pin and reads it on the Agency plan ($69/mo, or $59/mo billed yearly). Marker.io has it on its $149/mo Team plan. BugHerd attaches browser and OS metadata rather than console output.

Can I review a client site I cannot deploy to?

Yes with Ruttl, which loads the site through a proxy, and with Layerdock, which loads a public site from its review link with nothing installed. BugHerd, Ybug and Userback offer a browser extension. Marker.io and Feedbucket are widget-only and need a script tag on the page.
